More Than Senior Pictures: Creating Memories and Meaning During Senior Year
Senior year is exciting.
It’s the year everyone tells you to enjoy because it will go by so quickly. It’s filled with football games, dances, friendships, college decisions, celebrations, and all of those little moments that suddenly become “the last.”
But senior year can also feel like a lot.
There are big decisions to make, expectations to navigate, and an entire future waiting on the other side of graduation. Sometimes, when you’re constantly thinking about what comes next, it’s easy to forget to actually enjoy where you are right now.
That is one of the reasons I believe being part of a Raleigh Senior Team should be about so much more than senior pictures.
I want to create beautiful portraits, absolutely.
But I also want to create an experience where seniors feel encouraged, celebrated, connected, and reminded of just how much they are capable of.
An Annual Senior Team Tradition
Since I started my Senior Team with the Class of 2021, we’ve made a trip to the beach every year.
What began as one of our group sessions has become one of my favorite annual traditions.
Fort Fisher has become our favorite place to gather, and each year we head to the North Carolina coast to spend time together, create senior portraits, and simply enjoy being a team.
This year was no different for the class of 2027.
Our beach experience included time at Kure Beach and Fort Fisher, with the seniors spending time together, hanging out, laughing, talking, and making memories along the way. As the team has grown, I’ve divided the beach experience into smaller groups over the past couple of years, giving us the opportunity to be more intentional with our time together.
And while I love the portraits we create at the beach, those aren’t the moments I think about most when I look back on these trips.
I think about the friendships.
The laughter.
The conversations.
The seniors becoming more comfortable with one another.
The memories they are creating during a year they will never get to experience quite the same way again.
That’s what makes this more than a photo shoot.
Choosing a Word for Senior Year
This year, I asked each of my seniors to choose one word that would represent what they want their senior year to be.
I love doing this because it forces us to pause for a minute.
Instead of only asking, “What are you going to do after graduation?” we can ask a different question:
“How do you want to live this year?”
What do you want to accomplish?
How do you want to grow?
What do you want to remember?
What kind of person do you want to be when you walk across that stage?
Their answers were incredibly meaningful.
Some chose words about growth and becoming stronger, like Determination, Elevate, and Thrive.
Some wanted to remember to stay present and appreciate the season they’re in, choosing words like Presence, Moment, and Intentional.
Others wanted to stay grounded in who they are, with words like Rooted, Authentic, and Authenticity.
There were words about courage, purpose, confidence, and being driven.
One senior chose Soar, wanting to aim high and work toward her goals.
Another chose Nostalgic, wanting to appreciate the memories, friendships, and experiences that have shaped her.
And one senior chose Holographic—a beautiful reminder that we are made up of so many different experiences, relationships, interests, and moments. No single part of us defines who we are.
One senior chose Culmination, hoping her final year of high school would feel like an epic finale.
And another chose Grace, wanting to grow, become the person God created her to be, trust His plan, and appreciate every moment along the way.
Different words.
Different goals.
Different perspectives.
But together, they reminded me of just how much potential is sitting in front of these seniors right now.
A Word Can Become a Reminder
I don’t expect these seniors to remember their word every single day.
Senior year will get busy.
There will be stressful days. There will be decisions that feel overwhelming. There will be moments when things don’t go according to plan.
But that’s exactly why I love the idea of choosing a word.
It gives you something to come back to.
When you’re nervous about trying something new, remember Courage.
When you’re tempted to worry so much about the future that you miss today, remember Presence or Moment.
When you need to remind yourself to keep going, remember Determination or Driven.
When you’re questioning who you are, remember Authentic or Rooted.
When you’re standing in front of a new opportunity, remember Soar.
And when senior year feels like it’s moving entirely too fast, remember to be Intentional about the people, experiences, and memories you’re making along the way.
Because someday, this year will be a memory.
And I want these seniors to be able to look back and know they didn’t simply survive their final year of high school.
They lived it.
Walking Alongside Them
This is the part of being a Senior Team photographer that means the most to me.
I don’t want to simply photograph these seniors as they are today.
I want to encourage them as they grow into who they are becoming.
I want them to know that they are more capable than they realize.
That they don’t have to have their entire future figured out yet.
That it’s okay to try something new.
That it’s okay to take up space.
That it’s okay to be exactly who they are.
That their accomplishments matter—but so do the friendships, the laughter, the ordinary Tuesday afternoons, the beach trips, the late-night conversations, and all of the little moments that make up this one very special year.
That’s why our Senior Team includes more than individual portrait sessions.
It’s group sessions and beach trips.
It’s hangouts and adventures.
It’s giving back to our community.
It’s friendships.
It’s celebrating each other.
It’s creating an environment where seniors can be themselves and know they have someone cheering them on.
The photographs are part of the experience.
But they aren’t the whole experience.
Years from now, I hope these seniors look back at their photographs and remember more than what they wore or what location we photographed them in.
I hope they remember who they were becoming.
I hope they remember the people they shared this season with.
I hope they remember the courage they found, the goals they chased, the opportunities they took, and the memories they made.
And most of all, I hope they remember that during this incredibly important year of their lives, they had people beside them reminding them:
You are capable. You are worthy. You are important. And you can do hard things.
More Than a Senior Photography Experience
That is what I hope the Raleigh Senior Team becomes for every senior who joins it.
A place to create incredible portraits, yes.
But also a place to create friendships, confidence, memories, and experiences that become part of their story.
Because senior year only happens once.
