Finding the best photographer for your family can be overwhelming and stressful. As a Mom of 2 teenagers I completely understand how stressful this decision can be. We all have this vision in our head of what our perfect family portrait will look like. Now to find the best photographer for your family to make that vision a reality! Here are 5 tips to consider when choosing your family photographer.

1. STYLE
This might seem like a no-brainer. Of course you should pick your family photograper depending on their photographer's style(shooting and editing style). There are several photography styles to choose from, Light/Airy, Life Style, Dark/Moody etc. But I want you to think beyond their photographer's style when choosing your family photographer. There are many photographers with those styles, once you know the image style you want let's look at other aspects of those photographers. What is their Communication Style? Do they respond to questions quickly or does it take forever to get a response from them? What is their personality like? Are they fun and joke around or are they serious and to the point? How do they interact with children? Do they tell jokes and make the kids laugh or do they stick to strictly making the kids hold a certain pose? How do they interact with dogs/cats? Do they even like animals or will they have dog treats during the session? Do they do styled sessions with props? Are they willing to help you pick out your family's outfits? Yes that is a lot of questions, but answering these will help you decide on the best photographer so that you and your family can have the best experience. So how do you find out the answers to these questions? Well that falls into Tip #2.

2. REVIEWS
How many Stars do they have? Normally before I make a big purchase I always check the reviews on the product. Picking a photographer should not be anything different. This is a big purchase, you want to be able to share your images with friends/family and display your family throughout your house. These are memories to treasure for many years to come. It's a BIG DEAL! Check out the photographer's website/social media pages for reviews from past clients. If you have a friend that has used this photographer send them a text or give them a phone call and ask them about their experience. Be sure to ask about their experience from the first time they contacted the photographer all the way until their gallery, prints etc were delievered. Ask more than one person, their experience could've been completely different. Ask if they would book a session with this photographer again in the future. If their answer is YES, then this might be the photographer for you.

3. BUDGET
Do you have a set budget on what you want to spend on your session and prints etc? Prices can vary depending on location. Be aware of what is included in the session price. Does that include any digital images or prints? If only a few or none images are included in the session price, what is the cost and details of their packages? These are things you should ask or research before scheduling a session. You do not want to be blind-sided after your session and find out that the session price was only the sitting fee. If the photographer's regular sessions are out of your budget, look to see if they offer mini sessions. These are usually shorter sessions and less expensive, however they usually do not include as many digitals or images with the session. Be aware that running a photography business is not cheap there is a lot of cost and time that goes into running a successful photography business.

4. LOCATION
Do you have a location in mind for your session? Indoors? Outdoors? Do you want a more unique location compared to the usual photography locations in your area? Do you want props or a styled shoot? Do you want a natural setting, woods or water? Some photographers have exclusive locations that they can offer to their clients, or unique props/setups for their sessions. Or is there a popular location that you are really wanting to hold your session? Not all photographers like to use props, so if this is the type of session you are looking for this can help you make your decision.

5. INSPIRATION
Love, Joy, Happiness, Laughter ..... Can you see these things in their photographs? You should want your photographs to speak to you. You want to be able to look back at your family photos years down the road and see the laughter of your little girl/boy. See the Love in your wife/husband's eyes as he looks at you. These pictures should make you have a deep emotional response. This is why it is so important to pick the right photographer for your family. Photos are memories to last a lifetime!
